Mother and daughter behind "wicked fraud" are repaying elderly victim

Saturday 29 July 2023

A mother and daughter who swindled an 83-year-old man of his savings are paying him back as agreed, the Royal Court has heard.

Amanda Joan Louis (52) and daughter Shannon Stephanie Bellas (27) had befriended the man and repeatedly asked for loans of cash – falsely promising to pay him back.

Bellas had received £11,317 from the man and Louis received £6,127 in what was described as a "mean and nasty exploitation, and a wicked fraud".

They were sentenced to 240 hours of community service each, but were spared prison so that they could work and earn the money to pay him back.

Bellas is currently paying the man back at rate of £250 per month, and Louis is paying £200 per month.

The Court heard that, at the current rates, Bellas will have cleared her debt in around three years and Louis in around two years.

Deputy Bailiff Robert MacRae ordered another review next year and warned the women: "It is important that you carry on making the payments."
