Goodbye disposable vapes? Ministers announce ban plan

Monday 11 September 2023

Ministers have today announced plans to follow other jurisdictions by banning disposable vapes in Jersey for "both environmental and health-related reasons".

The proposed ban will be subject to consultation, but could be introduced through an extension of the Single Use Plastics Law.

This law already prohibits the distribution of single-use-plastic bags and single-use-paper bags in Jersey, and was designed to be able to prohibit other single-use items such as disposable vapes.

Other jurisdictions are also considering, or have already introduced, similar bans.

As well as the health concerns associated with the use of disposable vapes, the Government said that the make-up of these products is leading to valuable resources being thrown away as well as littering of the environment.

When disposable vapes are included with general waste, the materials are destroyed rather than reused.

Although the separated parts of these vapes can be recycled, it is a time-consuming, manual process.

They can cause fires in bin lorries or at the Energy Recovery Facility if not disposed of correctly, especially if damaged.
