No action in potential child abduction case

Police investigating two possible child abduction attempts in the middle of town have released a 50-year-old woman from bail and say they have closed the case for now.

They say that if new information comes up they’ll investigate, but that they don’t have enough evidence to take the case any further.

The original arrest followed reports that a child had been approached by a woman in Liberation Square on Sunday 22 June, and that the following week a woman matching the same description had taken an 18-month-old girl’s hand in Liberation Square and tried to lead her away.

In a statement this morning, police said: “In the absence of any new information officers have now concluded their enquiries into two incidents where a woman approached children in St Helier.

“If any new information comes to light it will be investigated.

“There have also been no further reported incidents of this kind.

“The woman arrested has been released from bail in the absence of sufficient evidence to proceed.”

The only information released about the suspect arrested was that she was about 50-years-old, around 5 foot 3 tall with what the police called a "proportionate to heavy build".
