Pride celebrations will still be going ahead in Jersey this weekend, but with some changes, the organising committee has announced.
Liberate said that it had been in communication with the Bailiff's Chambers and Government of Jersey following the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, yesterday.
Following this, it concluded that, as a "mark of respect", the planned Pride parade through central St. Helier will not go ahead on Saturday. However, the Pride Village will still be open.
Liberate, the organisers, said that a moment of reflection would occur before the LGBTQ+ community celebration begins.
"On the advice of the Bailiff’s Chambers, who have coordinated with the Lord Chamberlain’s Office, public events are being asked to continue, but with an appropriate period of reflection at the outset," Liberate said.
"The Pride Village in People’s Park will open at 2.30pm, and the planned events throughout the afternoon will now include a celebration of the life of Her Majesty, beginning with a one-minute silence at 3pm, followed by reflections from faith leaders and a choral tribute. Our speakers, including Lord Cashman CBE, will reflect on the many positive changes seen during Her Majesty’s reign and the service she has given to the nation.
"This decision has been taken only after very careful consideration and on the basis of advice provided to us by the Bailiff’s Chambers. We hope that the event can be shared by all the community who wish to celebrate the life of Her Majesty, the progress of LGBTQ+ rights during her 70 years on the throne, and to welcome the reign of His Majesty King Charles III."
It is not the only event to have been affected this weekend.
Liberate has also called off its Power and Equality conference due to take place today, the WI will not be running its climate change conference tomorrow, and the inaugural event for Grouville's new Repair Café will not be going ahead.
The Run for Kezia remains under review.
