Online renewal for dog licences 'fetches' success with islanders

Sunday 21 January 2024

Dog owners are being reminded to renew licences for their pets before the end of January to avoid paying a double fee.

Islanders can do so on a new online registering system which aims to simplify the licensing process.

This has been “well received”, according to the Chair of the Comité des Connétables.

All dogs in the island have to be registered for a licence every year.

The fee is £10 per dog, and the deadline to apply is Wednesday 31 January. The fee doubles to £20 from 1 February.

Dogs under six months old, as well as guide dogs, are exempt.

Doglicences.je was launched late last year and provides an online portal for the purchase of dog licences.

Since the beginning of this year, more than 5,000 licences have been purchased and over 80% of these were online applications.

Comité des Connétables chair Mike Jackson said: "We are delighted that doglicences.je has been well received and that owners find it provides a simple, quick process to apply and pay for a dog licence.

"We expect the percentage purchasing online may drop a little as paper applications are processed in the next couple of weeks but, overall, the launch has gone very smoothly.

"There are still some 4,000 dog licences to be renewed before the end of January and we would remind dog owners not to delay as a double charge of £20 per dog applies from 1 February."

Dog owners are able to self-manage their record through doglicences.je and will receive email reminders to renew next year.

There is no need to create an account or remember a password – access to the system and dog licence details is by 'magic link'.

The website has taken over from the systems used by individual parishes, although paper applications will continue to be accepted.
