St. Helier rejects £6.5m hospital land deal

Wednesday 15 December 2021

St. Helier parishioners have thrown out the Government’s offer of £6.5m and a "land swap" in return for the land it needs to construct the highway to the new hospital.

In a Parish Assembly vote held this evening, the deal was rejected with just 14 in favour and 47 against.

Only individuals attending the Parish Hall in person were able to vote, not those watching the Assembly online.

As well as the £6.5m cash and “swap” for the zone currently occupied by Jersey Bowling Club – which is owned by the Parish – for “land and equivalent facilities” at Warwick Farm, where Jersey Hemp is based, the deal included:

  • some re-provision of lost parking facilities;
  • relocation of recreational facilities;
  • and relocation and re-provision of trees.

Had parishioners supported the deal, the land purchases would have only gone ahead if planning permission for the £800m Overdale ‘health campus’ is received.

The Government will now look to use its compulsory purchase powers to acquire the land.
