Personal items recovered from trawler wreck

Wednesday 21 December 2022

A search of the wreck of a trawler which sank off St. Ouen's Bay after colliding with a freight vessel has recovered some personal items from the crew, but is still to find a third body.

Two bodies have so far been recovered from the wreck area, but have yet to be formally identified.

The L'Ecume II sank after colliding with Condor's Commodore Goodwill freight boat on Thursday 8 December, with three fishermen – skipper Michael 'Mick' Michieli and crewmen Larry Simyunn and Jervis Baligat – believed to have died.

Underwater robots operated by the crew of the offshore support vessel Freja have been searching the interior, with the latest stage of the search expected to conclude on Thursday.

A spokesperson for Ports of Jersey said some personal items believed to belong to crewmen had been recovered by the robot, and would be passed on to family members when investigation work was complete.

The existing exclusion zone at the site remains in place until the Freja leaves the site.

The spokesperson added: "We are still actively searching for the third missing fisherman."
