Plans to ban cars at Charing Cross

Plans are afoot to close off Charing Cross this summer and stop traffic getting from Broad Street through to Sand Street.

The Department for Infrastructure want to trial the road closure from the beginning of June to make it safer for all the walkers and cyclists that use it and to give the area more of a buzz.

The department say it's pedestrians and cyclists who use the narrow stretch the most and have counted 2,300 people passing through the cut at lunchtimes and that that number is likely to increase when the International Finance Centre on the Waterfront is built.

They want to make the area more attractive and vibrant with alfresco seating and to improve the public realm for commuters, shoppers and tourists whilst accommodating business deliveries.

Infrastructure Minister Eddie Noel said: “The narrow pavements of the road from Broad Street to Sand Street struggle to cope with the large numbers of pedestrians using the area.

"As part of the ‘Future St Helier’ initiative, DfI in partnership with the Department of the Environment and the Parish of St Helier, plan to start a trial road closure this summer and we would like your comments before commencing the trial so that we can plan the closure.”
