Q&A: What's happening on the day of the Queen's funeral in Jersey?

Tuesday 13 September 2022

Her Majesty's State Funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19 September at 11:00, it has been confirmed.

Here's everything you need to know about what will be happening nationally and in Jersey during the period of mourning and on the day.

Who from Jersey will be attending the funeral and why?

The Bailiff, Sir Timothy Le Cocq, will be attending in his capacity as Acting Lieutenant-Governor.

The Lieutenant-Governor - who is appointed by the Monarch on a five-year term - is responsible for representing the Crown in Jersey, acting as adviser, and hosting Royal and ambassadorial visits to the island.

As naval officer Vice Admiral Jeremy Kyd CBE will not be taking up the role until October 2022, the Bailiff is currently Acting in the role, and as such will attend the Queen's State Funeral in this capacity.

Members of the States of Jersey Police and Bailiwick Law Enforcement (Guernsey) have also travelled to London to support the Metropolitan Police with the service and other related policing engagements in advance.

What is happening in Jersey on the day of the State Funeral?

States Members have approved a bank holiday on Monday 19 September to enable islanders to watch the State Funeral.

Schools and many businesses - including some retailers - will close.

Jersey Heritage has confirmed that its sites will be closed and Jersey Zoo will also be closed.

Other types of businesses that decide to remain open have been asked by the Bailiff to "operate with respect for the occasion, for the duration of the State funeral when it begins at 11:00."

Non-urgent surgeries and routine outpatients appointments have been postponed.

Flights at Jersey Airport will be operating as normal, and screens will be erected in the Terminal so that islanders can watch the service. While the funeral takes place, freight operations and commercial harbour activity will also be paused, Ports of Jersey has confirmed.

The Parish of St. Helier has changed the days of its bin collections to accommodate the bank holiday.

Jersey Bulls have confirmed their home fixture that was due to take place this weekend has been postponed as a mark of respect.

Where can I watch the State Funeral?

As well as on national TV and streaming services, there are a number of other ways islanders will be able to follow the State Funeral.

Screens will be set up at Parish Halls around the island.

The Bailiff's Office has also urged hospitality venues to remain open so that islanders can "watch the funeral in the comfort of licensed establishments."
