A major UK home and garden retailer is looking to move into Motor Mall’s Grande Route de St. Jean premises, as the car seller moves all of its vehicle sales and servicing onto one site in St. Peter.
The Range, which has more than 170 stores across the UK, has submitted a planning application to change the use of the area from a retail car sales workshop and forecourt to a non-food retail site.
More than 50 new jobs will be created at The Range, according to the company. Meanwhile, Jacksons, which owns the Motor Mall brand, says that no redundancies will arise from its plans to consolidate its business.
If plans are approved, La Grande Route de St. Jean will also be widened with a ‘feeder lane’ to enable safer site access and exit, pavements will be widened, and a new bus shelter will be installed.
The Range is the brainchild of husband and wife Chris and Sarah Dawson, who were equal 79th on the 2021 Sunday Times Rich List, with an estimated fortune of £2.05bn, which has not changed since last year.
The son of a market trader, Mr Dawson founded home and DIY chain, The Range, in his native Plymouth in 1989. The business now claims to be the fastest growing retailer in the UK with over 175 stores nationwide. It has also partnered with Iceland, selling the frozen-food specialists products in 70 of its stores.
In 2017, it was reported that he had made the decision to transfer his shares in the business to his wife after she decided to make Jersey her main home.
“Jersey is a market we’ve been looking at for some time and we’re very excited to be submitting this Planning Application. Our ethos has always been to bring our customers great quality products at the most competitive prices, drawing together everything needed to create beautiful homes,” a spokesperson for The Range said.
