External mediator called in to aid discussions around Havre Des Pas lido

Saturday 15 April 2023

Stakeholders are optimistic that relationships around Havre des Pas lido are "on the mend" — as an external mediator is called in to help their discussions.

Minister for Infrastructure Tom Binet has said that he is optimistic about relationships between those negotiating the future of the lido are being repaired.

They are using Graeme Smith, the former CEO of Jersey Business, as an independent mediator.

Speaking at the Havre des Pas Improvement Group meeting, Marcus Calvani, who operates the venue, said that he had visited Guernsey recently and was taking inspiration from the Vive La Valette project.

The Vive La Valette group formed a charitable trust in Guernsey, raising half a million pounds for two swimming pools which were reopened to great acclaim last summer.

Mr Calvani is co-CEO of the Jersey Hospitality Association and currently operates the Havre Des Pas lido without a lease, although he is planning to host multiple events at the venue in the coming weeks.

"There is a love for the lido," Mr Calvani said. "We can have an incredibly strong group of people the finance firms and law firms that use it."

He is planning open-air theatre performances with a UK-based arts company in the coming weeks, and there are 30 weddings scheduled at the venue this year.

Mr Calvani added that he recognised the community's desire for the lido and kiosk.

The lido operates as a swimming pool, a pool kiosk, and as a venue for private and corporate events.
