Residents object to car dealership plans for St Brelade pub

Monday 21 December 2020

A group of St Brelade’s Bay residents is objecting to an application by the owners of the La Marquanderie Pub to turn half of its car park into a car dealership.

The pub has applied to change 800 square metres into ‘retail space’ for the dealership. As well as to create around 25 spaces for sale cars, the application also seeks permission to install a temporary cabin-style office in the south-western corner of the car park.

Although just published, the application has already met with opposition. Moz Scott, Chairman of St Brelade’s Bay Association, said: “A car dealership would not fit into the context and value of the Bay as a scenic tourist spot nor even the policy to increase housing spread that Government has been pursuing at the expense of the bay’s tourist offering.

“Ironically, the site is in the only area in the bay that government has proposed to be redesignated as Coastal National Park in the next Island Plan, illustrating everything that is wrong about the Government’s vision for the bay.

“With the site not having a prime seafront location, the association is likely to be more open to the site being converted for housing use, if developed sensitively, than it has been for the Wayside site.

Eight weeks ago, the association launched a petition for the bay to be redesignated as Coastal National Park, which has currently attracted just under 800 signatures.
