School goes red to remember "passionate" teacher

Children and staff at Plat Douet primary school will be wearing something red each day this week in memory of a “much-loved” teacher who suddenly passed away.

Year 1 teacher Jo Brinkworth died in the early hours of Friday morning in what was described as a “huge shock to the whole school community”.

“Mrs Brinkworth was a caring, considerate and much-loved teacher and she will be enormously missed by all of us at Plat Douet School. Because of our close school community, this death touches everyone,” Plat Douet wrote on Facebook.

“Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time. We would appreciate it if you respect the privacy of her family and the school community at this time.” 

They said that staff and students were receiving support from the Education Department.

More than 100 people have since shared memories and praise for the “ray of sunshine” teacher on social media.

One parent wrote: “Every child should have a Mrs Brinkworth as a teacher! She was so warm, fun and kind. Such a sad day for all who knew her.”

Another lamented the departure of a “wonderful and cheerful soul”, who was “always helpful and attentive towards the kids.”

A childhood friend from New Zealand described Mrs Brinkworth a “beautiful soul” and said she was “lucky” to have known her.

One father described Mrs Brinkworth as someone “who had a true passion for teaching that just came natural”, adding: “Rest easy kiwi Jo.”

A former pupil said she would “always remember learning the Poi and Haka after her teaching us so passionately."

She added: “Such a lovely teacher with a golden heart. Forever will be missed.”

To pay tribute to Mrs Brinkworth, Plat Douet said it will be having a ‘wear something red’ week starting today (Monday 4 October).
