Show some Pride!

Friday 11 September 2015

Organisers expect around 1,000 people at Jersey’s first Pride event tomorrow.

The event – organised by equality charity Liberate – will be led by an open-topped coach leading a parade from West’s Centre at 12.45 pm around town before ending in Weighbridge Square at 1.30 pm, followed by live music and family-friendly entertainment.

The event has been sponsored by the Co-op, RBC, Citi, Ce Soir, G4S and Barclays.

When the parade was announced in July, Liberate Vice-Chairman Christian May said that it was an opportunity for anyone who believes in equality and diversity turning out as part of a global phenomenon.

At the time, he said: “It allows the community and their friends and family to come together, firstly, to show how proud they are to be part of a diverse society and, secondly, to celebrate being free to make that statement. Pride transcends politics. It’s a celebration of inclusion.

“Jersey has taken some bold steps recently, and will continue to do so, to ensure equality for all its citizens, regardless of their race, gender or sexuality. The Island should be proud of what it has achieved and Pride is one, very visible way, to demonstrate that.”

The Jersey branch of Liberate was formed in November.
