A veteran human rights campaigner, political activist and blogger is the sixth person to declare his candidature to replace Senator Zoe Cameron.
Mike Dun has stood unsuccessfully before, but says that isn’t deterring him. If elected he says he will only see out the remaining 20 months of Senator Cameron’s term of office.
The main platform of Mr Dun’s campaign is Brexit and how it might affect Jersey.
On his website he writes: “This is an election for one seat only on a short-term basis and I am not proposing to embark on a political career as a Senator. I already attend and blog on virtually every Scrutiny Hearing besides many other political activities campaigning and representing people with their battles against government.”
He then goes on to say: “But I feel that BREXIT is of such importance that one elected representative of the 49 at least should be dedicated to speaking for the public on this complex issue.’
Also declared are sitting States member Deputy Sam Mezec, former politicians Senator Sarah Ferguson and Deputy Guy de Faye, lawyer and activist Christian May, and singer and entertainer Stevie Ocean.
Nomination meeting for the by-election is being held at the Town Hall at 19:30 on Tuesday, August 9. Voters will have until noon on Monday 8th August to ensure that they are on the main Electoral Register and up to noon on Wednesday, August 31, to be on the Supplementary Register. The by-election is on Wednesday, September 7.
The by-election was prompted due to the shock resignation of Senator Zoe Cameron. She quit in frustration at the beginning of the month saying she’d been cold-shouldered by the Council of Ministers.
