Surprise! Health issues Kinder Egg warning

Tuesday 05 April 2022

Jersey’s health authorities are warning islanders about a potential nasty surprise in their Kinder Eggs.

Government officials are urging islanders not to eat Kinder products with best before dates between 11 July 2022 and 7 October 2022.

It follows a number of children in the UK falling ill after eating Kinder Surprise eggs.

Investigations by UK Public Health authorities have since found a link between reported cases of salmonella poisoning and the product.

Ferrero, the product’s maker, has withdrawn the product as a precaution while investigations continue. The products thought to be affected were all manufactured at the same factory.

Other Kinder products are not believed to be affected.

“To reduce the risk of any further illness, consumers should not eat the products listed in the recall alert and they/the parent or guardians of children should follow the risk advice within it,” a Health spokesperson said.

“Symptoms of salmonellosis typically resolve themselves within a few days and include diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever. However, symptoms can be more severe and lead to hospitalisation, especially in the very young and those with weakened immune systems,” they added.

Guernsey’s health service has also issued a warning.
