A 58-year-old man found in possession of £30,000-worth of cannabis stashed in a rucksack and jacket has been given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for one year.
The 1.2kg of the drug was found at Desmond Patrick Porée’s home in St. Peter when police searched it on 21 June 2019.
They found herbal cannabis with a street value of up to £25,575 in a rucksack and cannabis resin with a street value of up to £5,300 in a jacket, safe and wooden box in the house.
A safe on a sideboard also contained a plastic grinder, cannabis resin, a quantity of cash and a bar of precious metal.
In police interview, Porée accepted that the seized cannabis belonged to him. He claimed that it was for his personal use, and he had no intention to sell it.
He added that he smoked four to five grams of cannabis a day and he usually smoked cannabis resin but preferred to smoke herbal cannabis when it was available. He said he smoked five to six joints when he returned home from work, which contained a cannabis-tobacco mix.
Deputy Bailiff Robert MacRae was sitting with Jurats Collette Crill and Kim Averty.
