Islanders knit thousands of poppies for Remembrance Day

Sunday 12 November 2017

Islanders have rallied in a "superb community effort" and created 1,500 hand-knitted, crochet and felt poppies to decorate the Central Market Fountain for Remembrance Day.

Many of the beautiful hand-crafted Poppies will be sold after today, to help to raise further funds for the Royal British Legion.

The poppies, which have been described as "unique, beautiful and very detailed," were assembled in wreaths before going on display around the market fountain. They were handcrafted by clubs and individuals across the island in what the Consumer Council descried as, "...a truly superb community effort."

The Annual Remembrance Day Service and Parade will take place today at 11:00 at the Cenotaph in the presence of His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, GCB, ADC, the Bailiff Sir William Bailhache, and the Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst.

The ceremony will start with a gun salute and  a two minute silence after which wreaths will be laid.

A service led by the Dean of Jersey, the Very Reverend Mike Keirle, will follow before a marching parade and a motorcycle ride-past.
