Time to hit the lights

Police are warning drivers, cyclists and Islanders walking to and from work to make sure they can be clearly seen on the roads.

Officers have dealt with a number of complaints this week about people who were not using their headlights or bike lights when the roads were wet and there was poor visibility.

They are warning people to check all their lights are working before going anywhere and to make sure they switch them on when it’s hard to see.

Road safety Officer Philip Blake said: “I would just like to take the opportunity to remind people to just take a second and think whether other road users can see them. Dark colours seem very popular, but as the nights draw in and we experience the darker morning it’s vital that pedestrians either wear colours to help them to be seen or at the very least carry something to help other road users to see them.

“Cyclists should ideally wear fluorescent reflective clothing or at the very least brighter colours and make sure they are displaying a set of lights on their bike, white to the front and red to the rear.

“They may be satisfied that they can see but it’s better to be safe and have the lights on, than to be sorry.”
