Tributes paid to “warm lady” behind the Hungry Man

Wednesday 20 September 2017

Islanders are paying tribute to the former owner of the colourful Hungry Man after she sadly passed away.

Whether prepping a Marshmallow Mountain Hot Chocolate to heat up on a chilly day or a hangover cure in the form of a ‘Double Decker Health Wrecker’, Katie Blampied was known to always serve with a smile.

Founded in 1947 as the Copper Pot, Katie’s alterations to the Rozel-based café secured its place as a bustling favourite among local and global visitors for its scenic views, eye-catching caricatures by artist son Edward, cream teas and soft Portuguese burger baps.

After 13 years at the helm, Katie stepped down in 2010, but continued as a lively member of the team.

In a message posted on Facebook, the establishment’s current owners broke the news of her passing: “It's a very sad day at The Hungry Man. Today we say Goodbye to Katie Blampied, owner of the Hungry Man (1997-2010, and part of the team both before and after) and beloved friend to all of Rozel Bay.

“Katie was a true inspiration to us all and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Eddie, Sophie, Lizzie and the family, at this very sad time. Rest In Peace, Katie, you will be forever in our hearts.”

Tributes have since poured in over social media for the iconic Jersey character, who “gave life her all.”

“We spent many happy times in the bay as a family and Katie was always there at the heart of it. She was such a fun, warm, friendly lady. It’s so sad! All our sympathy to her family,” Stuart Powell wrote.

Marilee Picot recounted “many happy hours and cuppas at Rozel”, while Tania Angell said, “smiles and giggles are my memories.”

Sarah Pope thanked her “for all the yummy food u have made in the past.”

“That is sad news indeed. Thoughts with her family and friends but what a legacy and present she leaves the island,” Kevin Pamplin added.
