From politicians past and present to GMB presenter Susanna Reid, and BRIT Award nominee Nerina Pallot…social media has been awash with tributes to broadcaster, Gary Burgess.
The 46-year-old passed away on New Year’s Day at Jersey Hospice. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer in November 2020, but continued his work as a reporter at ITV Channel until August 2021.
He is survived by his husband, Alan. In 2018, they became the first couple in Jersey to convert their civil partnership into marriage.
In a statement published on Sunday morning, Alan thanked well-wishers for "the positivity, warmth and support" which the couple received following Gary's terminal prognosis.
Such warmth has since been in abundance on social media, with individuals from the political, media, charity, business and wider community sharing how Gary touched their lives.
While many know him from his work on-screen at ITV Channel, many of those paying tribute were individuals who knew him from his early foray into broadcasting in Blackpool in the 1990s, which preceded a move to Guernsey in 2003 where he worked at Island FM and BBC Radio Guernsey.
