Quick finish needed for the marathon

Tuesday 20 September 2016

It may be a marathon and not a sprint, but on this occasion it does need a fleet-footed finish…..from the Jersey public.

Jersey Marathon organisers are worried that the event might be in jeopardy unless they can attract more volunteers to this year’s race.

The Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon is only a fortnight away and with special guest, former Liverpool and Juventus striker Ian Rush, coming to the Island, it needs exactly that…..a rush of volunteers, for the show to go on.

Some 2,000 runners are competing in the marathon and relay race on Sunday, October 2nd, hundreds of whom are from outside of Jersey, but an urgent call has now been made for more volunteers to help run the event.

Organisers say the importance of course marshals cannot be exaggerated as they ensure safety for all the runners.

The positions still required are course marshals and start/finish stewards. This year, the marathon organisers also need one volunteer to shadow the current start/finish marshal manager, with a view to taking over the role in future years.

All volunteer marshals are given a limited edition T-shirt, a packed lunch and refreshments and transport is provided to and from their positions.
