WATCH: Cycle café urges customers to make climate change pledge

A local bike shop and café has launched a new "green climate change pledge" with the help of a local graffiti artist.

The pledge – to ride your bike as much as possible – is to be offered to those purchasing standard or electric commuter-style bikes for transport purposes at Big Maggy's.

Participants will be eligible for a reward, such as a discount on their bike or accessories.

Richard Tanguy, one of the owners of Big Maggy’s, said the scheme would hopefully go live in the next few weeks.

"There is a lot of stuff going on at the moment about pushing sustainable transport and becoming more environmentally aware. There is also a lot of people who are buying bikes for that purpose."

"This enables you to get a discount, or save a bit of money, or get some free bits when you buy a bike, but on the premise that you make the promise to us – and yourself – that you will ride your bike as much as possible," he continued.

Mr Tanguy added that, to help promote the initiative, graphic designer James Carter of Midnight Industries had created a large piece of artwork in the shop.

"We came up with the idea, he designed it and made it pop.

"We just needed to decide what the offers would be and work out how we wanted to get it out there.

"What we will do is take a photo of them [the customer] against the wall and that will go onto our social media – and it is their responsibility [to uphold the pledge]," he added.

"It's a casual way of getting people to think about the purchase they have made and the effort they will [put in] to make a difference – because that is what we all need to do."
