Winging it: new butterfly stamps link Jersey to China

Sunday 03 September 2017

A new set of stamps which feature butterflies from both Jersey and China will be taking flight at the beginning of September.

Norwegian stamp artist, Martin Mörck and Chinese designer Wang Huming were commissioned to collaborate on these six illustrations as part of a series about the natural links between Jersey and China.

Previous stamp sets in the ‘Links with China’ series include ‘Garden Flowers’ issued in 2015 and ‘Waterfowl’ issued in 2016.

The six stamps in this new set each feature a different butterfly including the black-veined white, small tortoiseshell, swallowtail, purple emperor, white admiral and camberwell beauty.

Commenting on the newest stamps in the series, Melanie Gouzinis, Head of Philatelic at Jersey Post, said: “Jersey continues to develop its relationship with China both in terms of business and educational opportunities. Once again, we have used our stamp designs to explore some of the more simple aspects of everyday life and this year the focus is some of the butterflies that have been recorded in both Jersey and China.

“Not only do collectors around the world recognise the subjects featured on the stamps, the artists themselves are internationally respected and their stamps are very much sought after. We have worked hard to understand the Chinese philatelic market and, since launching this series in 2014, we are delighted to have seen a continued increase in our collector database with the support of philatelic media and specialist representation.”
