Budding young bakers have helped raise more than £700 in memory of the father and son tragically killed in a hit-and-run earlier this month.
Whether a gluten-free traybake or a towering showstopper, children up to the age of 14 were invited to share their best bakes in the ‘Great Junior Cafejac Bake Off’ last week.
A total of 15 bakers entered the competition at the Arts Centre-based café with an array of scrumptious slices, which members of the public were able to buy.
However, it was 11-year-old Theo's 'King of Chocolate Cake' that the Cafejac team crowned winner. He was awarded £100 cash in prize money, and allowed to choose the charity that the funds raised should go towards.
His chosen cause was the fundraiser in memory of Dean and Charlie Lowe, who died from their injuries after being hit by a car in Grouville. The fundraiser was set up with the aim of "having a positive impact in the island for performing arts" – one of Dean and Charlie's "passions in life".
13-year-old Kaila took second place and £50 with her 'Coconut for Cake Sake' dessert, and joint third were gluten-free bakers Anastasia (11) and Edward (9) with a carrot cake and chocolate tart respectively.
The Junior Bake Off was the first competition of its kind for the café, and staff said it was "absolutely a success".
"It's been an adventure in cake," the team said, adding: "Such a great effort from all our contestants, each and everyone of them are winners, its virtually impossible to single out a winner, as each cake was so different and so special in its own personal way."
The Cafejac team added that they were keen to host a similar charity competition for children in future.
"We will definitely do this again," they said. "There are already ideas going around for other fundraisers we could do for kids in their school holidays - possibly even a talent show!"
Every young baker was awarded a prize, with the top three receiving that bit more for their extra special effort (or most chocolate used).
