"No, it doesn't start at 51!" - and other menopause myths

Friday 28 October 2022

I am still ASTOUNDED at some of the mysteries that surround this time in our lives - it's time to start myth-busting!

The founder of Vitality40plus, Trudi Roscouet regularly provides menopause and wellbeing training, and has spoken to hundreds of women about the ups, downs and rage moments of the meno-journey.

Having reflected on the key misconceptions she comes across most frequently about menopause, she had this to say...

1. It doesn't start at 51

The menopause can start as early as 40 and in some cases such as elective or surgical hysterectomy even earlier.

2. It is not all about hot flushes!

Yes, that's right - it's so much more than that!

There are about 50 plus symptoms ranging from psychological to physical issues.

3. It doesn't happen overnight

The symptoms are so varied and generic and, looking back, can creep on you over the years.

You may experience only one hot flash but then start having migraines. For me, insomnia is the symptom that dragged on for years. By joining the dots and becoming more aware, you can take control of your health earlier.

4. Life is never the same again!

No it's not – it's better!

The great thing is no more periods but it's time for you – and to really think about what you want in your life.

5. HRT is the last resort

No no no – agreed, some people may not be able to take HRT due to a history of breast cancer in the family or other reasons, but please do NOT rule it out.

This body identical oestrogen, different to the synthetic version that we have taken for years in the contraceptive pill, is applied transdermally (through the skin), which allows direct access into the bloodstream and gives, in some cases, instant relief to some of the symptoms.

Do not feel like a failure if you tried to deal with the menopause holistically – I did, two years before I went on HRT. I became a really good version of myself but it didn’t quite cure the insomnia, or painful joints. Together with improving my knowledge on stress reducers such as mindfulness, it also helped me combat the irritability and mood swings which can be so debilitating.
