As the Christmas holiday season surrounds us with warmth and light, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect upon what makes Jersey so special: our people, our values and our sense of community.
Christmas is a time to pause and celebrate the values that bind us together – family, friendships, kindness and a shared commitment to building a bright future for Jersey.
This year has once again reminded us of the strength of these values. We have seen families supporting one another, neighbours lending a helping hand, and countless acts of kindness that embody the very best of who we are as islanders.
These simple yet often profound gestures remind us that Jersey’s greatest strength has always been its people.
I have always been proud to serve in our States Assembly and more recently as Chief Minister and I am sure I speak for all of my colleagues when I say, that together, we are working to create a future where everyone has the chance to succeed, where innovation meets sustainability, where we embrace our diversity and where no one is left behind.
But this vision can only be achieved if we continue to work as a community, supporting one another, and holding true to the values that make Jersey unique. Whether it’s through volunteering, mentoring or simply looking out for each other, every small act strengthens the fabric of our society.
The unexpected highlight of the year for many islanders was the Royal Visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla in July. It was a joyous occasion, filled with goodwill flowing both to and from the Royal couple, as thousands of islanders lined the streets, waved flags, and shared laughter and true island spirit through the torrential downpour that none of us were properly prepared for.
It was a moment that brought Jersey together, reminding us of the strength and warmth of our community, much like the togetherness we cherish every 25th December when we are fortunate enough to gather with family and friends.
These special occasions, made possible by incredible communal efforts, create a welcome sense of unity. They remind us of who we are, and what we can achieve, they provide light during times of challenge, when life’s everyday worries or the absence of loved ones weigh more heavily.
Over the past year, I’ve had the privilege of visiting many organisations including: schools, charities, and frontline services, meeting islanders from all walks of life and learning firsthand about their strong commitment to their roles and responsibilities and the challenges they face. The message remains clear: the need to help and support one another is ever-present.
This Christmas, let’s embrace the spirit of giving, not just through gifts but through our time, kindness, and care for one another. A kind word, a helping hand, or a moment of understanding can make all the difference to someone’s day.
Let’s ensure that everyone in Jersey feels the support of our community, particularly those who may be struggling or alone during the season.
As we look to the year ahead, there is much to inspire optimism. Our island, rooted in the strength of its people and its rich traditions, stands as a place of stability and opportunity.
I believe 2025 holds great promise, a year filled with fresh beginnings, bold ideas and opportunities for growth, both individually and collectively. By fostering collaboration and supporting one another, we can move forward with confidence and purpose, knowing that we can achieve remarkable things for our island.
In closing, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who are working tirelessly over the Christmas and New Year period to keep our island moving.
To the healthcare professionals caring for patients, the emergency services protecting our safety, and the frontline workers ensuring essential services run smoothly, your dedication does not go unnoticed.
Thank you to everyone in the hospitality, retail, and transport industries who work through the holidays to serve our community, and to the volunteers and charity workers offering comfort and support to those in need during this time.
Your commitment and hard work, often away from your own loved ones, make it possible for the rest of us to enjoy the season in safety and comfort.
