Adventuring abroad, sushi and a nice cuppa are just some of the things a local nutritionist turns to when she needs to cool off.
Jessica Pinel is an Associate Registered Nutritionist with a MSc in Nutrition and the owner of Humankynd Nutrition.
She spent six years working in medical health as a clinical physiologist and research scientist after completing her initial MSc in Biomedical Sciences in 2014. During that time, she developed an interest in preventative health which led her to qualify as a Health Coach from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition.
Her main areas of interest are fertility, cycle health and gut health but for Express she instead focused on her favourite ways to unwind...
I go...
...on holiday and get lost in nature.
Having your own business it's hard to truly switch off. Even though we haven't been able to do it much, I love to travel.
Surfing with dolphins in Australia, carving fresh powder tracks in the Alps, swimming with mantarays off the coast of Nusa Lembongan, adventure is definitely good for the soul.
...sushi - every single day if I could!
Give me a mixed sushi platter with edamame beans and a bowl of miso and I will be the happiest girl alive.
My favourite dessert has to be a cheese board with all the trimmings. Although I don't think sushi and cheese sound like a good combination.
I drink...
...a nice cuppa of English breakfast tea.
Call me patriotic, but I always start my day in true British style.
I'm also a sucker for a delicious fermented drink to nourish my gut. There are two I can't recommend enough, KTea kombucha (Africa flavour) and Biotiful kefir (Original flavour).
...Well, that depends on what I'm doing.
My favourite morning gym session anthem has to be 'Good as Hell' by Lizzo. Who doesn't feel good as hell after a morning sweat sesh?
At 21:00, I start my bedtime routine which involves dimming the lights, diving into a good book and listening to relaxing classical piano music.
...what are known as 'self help books', but what I think should be referred to as a basic education on how to ace life!
The three books I have read this year and see as truly life changing are 'Atomic habits', 'Miracle mornings', and 'How to do the work'.
Books that educate us on behaviour and teach us to self assess have the potential to provide us with skills to do some really magical self development. I am still working on implementing my own miracle morning but I'm determined to get there.
