Tania Sobey, Marathon runner: Five things I LOVE about Jersey

Friday 22 May 2020

The pandemic and accompanying lockdown have reminded many islanders of the things they love about Jersey which they may have taken for granted in the past.

For marathon runner and family woman Tania Sobey, the great outdoors and importance of community are top of her list.

Outside of her day job as HSBC's Wealth and Personal Banking Head, Tania spends her time keeping active and supporting local businesses.

To spread some positivity whilst island life isn’t yet back to normal, Tania told Express the five things she loves about where she lives...

1. Community is key

Jersey has a great spirit and pride; the friendliness and support of people is wonderful.  There are so many great organisations doing so much for others, and it fills me with pride that we have such a strong sense of community and togetherness.

I’m also proud to be a member of both the Advisory Board for The Diversity Network and, to support my passion for outdoor life, a member of Jersey Girls Run.

2. It’s (local) business time!

I love to buy local, especially from honesty boxes, and fully support the Genuine Jersey brand. It’s been heart-warming to see our community pull together during this crisis too by providing more support for local suppliers.

I’ve probably had far more takeaways in the last six weeks than I should, but it’s all for a good cause!

3. Home is where the haven is

It makes me so proud to call Jersey home. Having always been an avid walker – and in the last two years taken up running (including running the Jersey Marathon twice) – I love the fact I have the most incredible lanes and routes to train on, without fear for my safety.

4. We are family

They benefit from having so much on their doorstep and there’s always so much they can do, especially with us being an outdoor kind of family.

Even during lockdown, we’ve continued to enjoy walks, bike rides and doing many challenges to keep us healthy (within the restrictions). We do miss water activities, such as learning to surf though!

5. Life’s a beach

Why would you want to live anywhere else? There are so many to choose from and how can anybody ever bore of being able to access so many lovely bays and beaches! Plémont is by far the best beach in the world, having everything you could wish for in terms of beauty and variety, plus the bonus of 90+ steps to keep the fitness up!
