Jersey's young table tennis star Hannah Silcock celebrated her 16th birthday in style yesterday as she won her first ever Island Games gold medal alongside her sister, who was also making her Games debut.

Jersey secured their first ever Island Games team gold with a 4-0 victory over Guernsey – a milestone that was special in more than one way, as it was also player Hannah Silcock’s birthday.
Jordan Wykes got Jersey off to a dream start, before Hannah edged out Alice Edwards in the deciding game.

Luc Miller then faced Garry Dodd in a nail-biting round, before it was left to Silcock sisters Hannah and Kathryn to get the job done in the women’s doubles.
“I don’t think anything can top that,” said Hannah.“I was definitely nervous [against Guernsey’s Alice Edwards] but at one-nil up I thought, ‘Yeah, I can do this’. When it got to ten-all [in the final game] I was shaking but I knew what to do and I knew what I was going to do and when I won it was just amazing."
Though they compete against each other in singles matches, there is no sibling rivalry between the pair and the close bond between them was apparent throughout as they saw Jersey over the line with joyful freedom.
Despite a “tough course” with “flat grass” and “headwinds”, Jersey’s Rhys Hidrio stormed to gold.
He was put through his paces by Guernsey’s James Row and teammate Bradley Vaudin, who claimed silver and bronze respectively.
The team gold was secured by the home riders, however, while Jersey won team silver.
Olivia Allbut stormed to 400m hurdle gold.
She ran a perfect race from the outside lane to claim Jersey’s second athletics gold of Guernsey 2023 in a time 1:01.40.

“I felt good coming into it and just had to approach the race well – I’m buzzing,” an exhausted Allbut said at the finish line.
Fresh off the back of becoming British champion for a fourth time, Guernsey’s Alastair Chalmers was the star of the show in the 400m men’s hurdles, breaking the Island Games record on his way to gold.
Jersey’s Will Brown claimed a bronze medal in the same race, behind Guernsey’s Peter Curtis.
The first Jersey medal of day three of the athletics was claimed by Sam Maher in the 1,500m.
Isaac Dodds and Megan Hansford led the way with individual golds in the 400m and 200m individual medleys, while Dodds picked up another gold with Ollie Brehaut, George Storey and Robbie Jones in the 4x50m freestyle relay.
Thomas Deffains won silver behind Dodds in the 400m, while Gemma Atherley won silver in a pulsating 100m backstroke final.
That was Atherley’s fourth medal of the Games so far and she ended the day with a fifth when, along with Hansford, Erin Goodbody and Siena Stephens, Jersey took home bronze in the 4x50m medley relay after an amazing final leg from Atherley.

Jones also has five medals now, as he came second in the 100m butterfly.
Clara Ginnis got a bronze to add to the silver she won the day in the 1,500m freestyle and Deffains’ younger brother Matthew won bronze in the 200m freestyle.
Lucy O’Sullivan added another gold to her collection, being part of the victorious mixed compound head-to-head team of Angela Perrett, Hannah Bridle, David Davies, Lloyd Glendewar, Heath Perrett and Francisco Rocha, as they took on Guernsey.
Matt Neal secured his second silver medal in the fullbore Kings individual event.
Sarah Chalker and Amy Hall narrowly missed a medal in the ISSF 25m standard pistol team event.
Kevin Armstrong and Michael Quenault came 7th in the ISSF 10m air pistol team event.
In the ISSF 50m free pistol competition, Gregory Guida came fifth while he and teammate Chris Le Moeligou also placed fifth in the team event.
Jersey’s men’s team stormed into the semi-finals with a 100% record, not conceding a single goal. Toby Ritzema and Karl Hinds both grabbed a brace, while Luke Watson added one of his own during the second half.
Jersey’s women joined the men’s side in their respective semi-final by the narrowest of margins. Both Menorca and Jersey finished second in their groups, meaning the side with the better record went through as best placed runner-up.
However, in dramatic fashion, later transpired that there had been an administrative error, and it went down to a coin toss, which Jersey's women lost.
Jo Hacker has a two-shot lead after the first round in the men’s individual after shooting two under par. Alex Guelpa is also well placed in a five-way tie for third while Matthew Parkman is a shot further back in eighth and Josh Ozard lies in tenth.

In the ladies, Anabelle Lucas-Villar holds a one-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard. Flora Keites’round of 79 leaves her in a tie for 8th, with Hannah Scriven in 13th and Helen Lagadu in 23rd. Both the men and women are leading the team events.
James Tilley is still battling to be in medal contention in the ICLA 7 sailing class. He sits in 4th position after six races with a net score of 17 – one point behind Aland’s Thomas Lindström in third. Will Dengate is currently in 8th position.
In the ICLA 6 class, Ollie Boyle lies in 10th with Dylan Griffiths in 22nd after six races.
Michael Rive defeated Orkney’s Mark Causer 21-9 in the opening match of Group B singles before downing Cecil Alexander from Falkland Islands 21-11.
In Group A, Ann Cross won her opener 21-5 against Raymond Worthington of Ynys Môn but she finished third place in the group after losing 21-7 Guernsey’s Ian Merrien.

The pairs competition began yesterday, with the tandem of Luke Le Sueur and Cyril Renouf losing their opener 14- 13 to Guernsey’s Rosemary Ogier and Shirley Petit.
There was a better start for Sally Black and Jean Holmes who opened with a 23-18 win over Adrienne Edwards and Nia Roberts of Ynys Môn.
Jersey bowed out of the women’s basketball competition with a heavy 140-13 defeat to defending champions Menorca.
Jersey now has one more game to come – a ranking match to determine fifth and sixth place – against Faroe Islands.
