Jersey hit T20 hat-trick

Jersey eased to a clean sweep of women’s inter-insular victories in Guernsey, comfortably winning each of the three T20 matches.

Played in beautiful sunshine at the King George V Playing Fields, Jersey opened up the trio of fixtures with a 61-run win on Saturday.

After losing the toss, Jersey were put into bat and scored 139-6 from their 20 overs. The runs were fairly evenly shared with Chloe Greechan and Mia Maguire top scoring with 26 while Grace Wetherall made 21 coming in at three. Emily Merrien was the pick of the Guernsey bowlers claiming 3-24 from her four overs.

In response, Jersey kept it tight and Guernsey struggled to keep up with the rate.

Flo Copley removed three of the Guernsey top order as she finished with figures of 3-12 while captain Chloe Greechan bowled a very economical four overs – going for just nine runs and claiming two wickets as Guernsey finished their innings on 78-9.

In the second game, Guernsey once again won the toss but this time elected to bat.

Openers Philippa Stahelin and Fran Bulpit both made starts, while Rosie Davis coming in at number three scored 22 before being run out by Copley.

But much like the first game, Guernsey’s batters struggled to score quickly in the face of the Guernsey attack with Greechan once again keeping it very tight in her four overs, claiming figures of 1-8. Rising star Wetherall took 2-8 from her three overs.

The Sarnians ended their innings 84-8 which Jersey made short work of, knocking the total offin just 12 overs.

Openers Lily Greig and Maria da Rocha both made 26 to set up the win.

Jersey produced their most complete performance in the third and final match yesterday.

Having been put into bat, Jersey recovered from the early loss of opening batter Trinity Smith with the second-wicket partnership of Aimee Aikenhead and Grace Wetherall putting on 75.

Aikenhead anchored the innings with a brilliantly made half-century while allowing Wetherall to take on the brunt of the big hitting as she blasted her way to 48 off just 30 balls.

When Wetherall fell to the bowling of Molly Robinson, Analise Merritt came in and picked up where Wetherall had left off. Merritt hit nine boundaries on her way to a half-century as she and Aikenhead compiled a 96-run partnership as Jersey posted their highest ever T20 score in setting Guernsey 197 to win.

It was a total that Guernsey never threatened to hit as Greechan once again proved her prowess with the ball in her hand as she stifled the opposition batters.
