OLYMPIC FIX: From diving...to equestrian... and judo!

Wednesday 24 July 2024

As we count down to Paris 2024, Express is shining a light on the different clubs and groups available in Jersey for anyone inspired by the Olympians.

Welcome to the third instalment of OLYMPIC FIX.

Yesterday, we covered everything from boxing to BMX racing.

The sports on this week's agenda are...

Diving

Although there are no current options for pool diving on-island, what Jersey's extensive coastline offers instead is diving in the open ocean.

The Bouley Bay Dive Centre boasts summer courses in open water diving and scuba diving for adults and children. They also offer advanced safety courses plus much more.

Equestrian

There are many options in Jersey, including the Jersey Riding Club.

Other equine organisations in Jersey include the island's branch of the Pony Club for children and young people aged four to 25 to learn sports and compete. Additionally, the Riding for the Disabled Association offers rides for adults and children with learning disabilities from their base in St John.

Jersey also has links with the British Showjumping Association, which you can register with on the BSJA website.

Fencing

Football

Could you be a future England Three Lions or Lionesses player?

There are numerous clubs in Jersey for football whether you are looking for competitive league, accessible team, casual kick-around or holiday club for the kids.

The Jersey Football Association has all the relevant information including how to register as a player for any of their affiliated clubs.

Golf

For regular competitions in Mens, Ladies and Junior settings, Jersey Golf is the governing body for all golf clubs in Jersey.

These include The Royal Jersey Golf Club, Les Mielles, La Moye Golf Club, St Clement's, Les Ormes and Wheatlands.

Alternatively, if you haven't got your own clubs but want to give it a try, Longueville Golf Range is open to the public seven days a week.

Handball

If you're interested in this sport, why not join the Jersey Handball Club page on Facebook to find out more?

Hockey

Offering Mens, Womens, Juniors and Corporate leagues, the governing body of the sport in Jersey, Jersey Hockey, welcomes newcomers of all abilities.

Additionally, if ice hockey is more your thing, Jersey also has a roller/inline hockey club, The Seawolves, who play on skates most of the year but used the ice rink at the Weighbridge over winter.

Judo

The Jersey Judo Association is the governing body on the island for promoting the Japanese martial art sport.

They are affiliated with the British judo Association and host various classes from their two clubs, The Jersey Judo Club and the Torokan Judo Club and welcome newcomers from beginner to advanced level.

Taster sessions for the JJA are also free.
