Are you more careful about the products and services you choose these days? If you are then you’re in good company. From the way we shop, to the way we heat our homes and the type of vehicle we drive, we’re more aware that the choices we make have an impact on the world, and also closer to home.
Greener Islands
Globally, goals have been set to achieve net-zero carbon by 2050. At HSBC, we’ve committed to achieving the same goal by 2030. We believe we can act faster together, and can all make a difference, no matter how big or small a step we each take. With improved online access to products and services and a growing range of sustainable options, we’re helping our business and personal banking customers make their everyday banking greener, and in doing so helping the planet too.
Greener everyday banking
Our customers can now easily make their everyday banking greener in so many ways. Some are cutting down on their branch visits by banking online or through our mobile app. Many are reducing paper waste by switching to e-Statements and completing applications online. When it comes to limiting the use of plastic, HSBC customers can opt for a digital secure key instead of a plastic one, and soon they’ll even be using our debit and credit cards safe in the knowledge that they are recycled and will remain valid for longer.
Those who choose to invest with us have green fund1 options available which benefit the long-term future of their environment as well as their finances, and there will be plenty more coming soon. We’re helping borrowers too: customers taking out a loan to go green - for example buying an e-bike or updating to more sustainable heating - can opt for an HSBC Green Loan2 which supports the planting of 10m of hedgerow or 5 trees for every loan taken out. Our customers benefit and the Island benefits, it’s a win-win.
Finally, until the end of June 2021, for every savings account opened online, every registration completed for online banking, every download and activation of the mobile banking app, every switch to digital secure key, and every successful online credit card application, we’ll donate £103 on your behalf to local conservation charities.
Supporting green initiatives
Local charities and environmental organisations are making a difference by reintroducing native wildlife or restoring ancient habitats, and HSBC are proud to support them in initiatives such as planting trees and hedgerow.
Being sustainable and forward-looking however means so much more. We also work with local organisations which are helping young people reach their full potential. This includes improving financial literacy and setting young people up for success with access to education and training.

Charity partners
1Please remember that the value of investments, and any income received from them, can fall as well as rise, is not guaranteed and you may not get back the amount you invested.
2All credit applications are subject to status, our lending criteria and an assessment of the circumstances of the applicant. T&Cs apply. HSBC Green Loans are subject to approval for a green purpose and also provide £50 cashback.
3Applicable until 30 June 2021. Downloading and logging on to our mobile app counts for one donation only per customer. One donation can also be earned per savings account opened and per credit card successfully applied for. Each donation to our local charity partners will be used to plant trees and/or hedgerow, should donations exceed what is logistically possible for our charity partners we may direct excess funds towards alternative habitat protection projects run by them in the islands.
